Portugal Poll Puts Socialists First, Three Parties in Statistical Tie

Bruno Ribeiro·September 8, 2026·2 min read

A new opinion poll in Portugal places the Socialist Party (PS) in the lead, with the Chega party and the Democratic Alliance (AD) coalition in a statistical tie for second place. The survey was conducted by Pitagórica for CNN Portugal and TVI, as reported by observador.pt and other Portuguese outlets on Monday.

According to the poll, the PS, led by José Luís Carneiro, holds the top spot in voting intentions. However, the margin between the three main political forces is narrow enough to be considered a technical draw. The results suggest a competitive landscape, with the PS ahead but not by a decisive margin.

The poll also indicates a decline in support for the current government. Reports from 24Horas.pt and Jornal de Notícias characterize the findings as a setback for the AD government, led by Luís Montenegro, which now appears in third place. This is described as a significant shift, with the PS leading and Chega in second.

Observador.pt notes that despite the PS being in front, the overall picture is one of a three-way technical tie. This means the differences in support between the PS, Chega, and AD are within the poll's margin of error, making the exact ordering of the parties less certain than the headline numbers suggest.

This is the first weekly tracking poll released by CNN Portugal and TVI. The data points to a fragmented electorate and a challenging environment for the ruling coalition, which has seen its position weaken in this survey.

The coming weeks will show whether this poll represents a lasting trend or a temporary fluctuation in voter sentiment as the political landscape continues to evolve.
